What is the difference between jelly, jam, and preserves?

JELLY is made from fruit juice. Jelly is clear and firm enough to hold its shape when turned out of its container.

JAM is made from a blend of crushed pieces of fruit and fruit puree.

PRESERVES contain whole or large pieces of fruit, making them thicker and more fruit-filled than jams or jellies.

MARMALADE is jelly with shreds of citrus fruit peel.

CONSERVES are jams made from a mixture of citrus fruits and can also include nuts.

FRUIT BUTTERS are made from fruit pulp and sugar cooked together. There is no butter in fruit butter. The term may have developed to describe the appearance of the product or because it is a spread.

CHUTNEY and RELISH are flavorful, seasoned condiments with a consistency similar to jam. Chutney is typically made with fruits and relish is typically made with vegetables.

Does Smucker’s® have gelatin?

Gelatin is not an ingredient in our fruit spread products.

What's the best way to store Smucker’s® Goober®? Does Smucker’s® Goober® need to be refrigerated?

Is Smucker’s made in the USA?

All of our Smucker’s products are produced in manufacturing facilities in the U.S. & Canada.

What exactly is a manufacturing code, and how do I read it?

The manufacturing code is the date the product was made. It might look something like this: 4 122 420 0321.

The first number represents the year it was made. For instance, the 4 in our example code means it was made in 2004. A number 3 would mean it was made in 2003, 2 in 2002, and so on.
The next three numbers represent the day of the year the product was made. In our example, the 122 (or one hundred and twenty second day) is May 2 (May 3 during Leap Year).
The third set of numbers or letters are plant codes, which have nothing to do with the date.
Finally, the last four digits represent the time displayed in military time.

Where did the slogan, "With a name like Smucker's®, it has to be good®" come from?

The slogan has been used by our company since the mid-1950s. Initially, it referred to the unusual family name (Smucker) with the connotation that since it was such an odd name, the company had better produce outstanding products. As the company's reputation has grown and the name Smucker has become associated with high-quality products, the slogan meaning changed somewhat. According to customers, if you see the Smucker name on a product, you have assurance that the product will be good.
